§ Mr. WrayTo ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will instruct his officials in the overseas trade division to suspend their trade promotion visits to Nigeria. [24184]
§ Mr. Needham[holding answer 15 May 1995]: The Government recognize the difficulties of conducting business with Nigeria in the present political and economic climate. Nigeria nevertheless remain the United Kingdom's second largest export market in Africa. UK exports in 1994, although significantly down on the previous year, still amounted to £457.9 million. It would not be appropriate to withdraw the support the Department of Trade and Industry gives to UK companies continuing to do business in Nigeria.
