HL Deb 16 May 1995 vol 564 cc34-5WA
Baroness Gould of Potternewton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they intend to take to accelerate preparation of an additional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights to establish the principle of equality of rights between women and men as a fundamental right in the light of Recommendation 1269 (1995) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Lord Inglewood

The Council of Europe Steering Committee for Human Rights, on which the United Kingdom is represented, is currently considering the necessity for, and feasibility of, an optional protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights. The Government awaits the outcome of these discussions.
