To ask the Secretary of State for Education what has been the expenditure per(a) primary school and (b) secondary school pupil in real and constant price terms in every year since 1979; and what are the corresponding figures excluding staffing costs. [23395]

The table shows net institutional expenditure per pupil including and excluding staffing costs, in cash terms and in 1994–95 prices, on LEA-maintained nursery and primary and secondary schools in England from 1979–80 to 1993–94, the latest year for which provisional outturn figures are available. The primary figures include expenditure on nursery provision which cannot be differentiated.
