HC Deb 15 May 1995 vol 260 c2W
Mr. William O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the issues other than environmental issues that his Department takes into consideration when considering the routes of new motorways. [21672]

Mr. Watts

The objectives of the road building programme are to assist economic growth, conserve and improve the environment, enhance road safety and make better use of the existing road network. We are no longer making larger-scale additions to the network. The current programme is carefully targeted to focus on improvements to existing road corridors and building bypasses for towns and villages.

Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, which four lane stretches of motorway in the United Kingdom do not have lighting. [23857]

Mr. Watts

This is an operational matter for the Highways Agency. I have asked its chief executive to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Mr. Gordon Prentice, dated 15 May 1995: The Minister for Railways and Roads, Mr. John Watts, has asked me to write to you in reply to your recent Parliamentary Question about lighting on four lane motorways. Road lighting has been installed on all four lane motorways except for a short length on the southbound M6 motorway between junctions 3 and 4 in Warwickshire.
