HC Deb 11 May 1995 vol 259 c604W
Mr. Madden

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make it his policy to seek to arrange for an exemption(a) throughout the United Kingdom and (b) throughout the European Union of the personal protective equipment at work regulations to enable resident Sikhs to wear holy turbans; and if he will make a statement. [23097]

Mr. Oppenheim

[holding answer 10 May 1995]: The European directive on the use of personal protective equipment at work does not permit such an exemption. During the negotiations on this directive, the UK pressed for a derogation which would have allowed an exemption to be granted, but was unsuccessful.
