HC Deb 11 May 1995 vol 259 cc600-1W
Sir Ralph Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many males aged between 50 and 65 years are not in full-time employment, as defined by working over 16 hours per week. [22395]

Miss Widdecombe

The latest estimates from the labour force survey for autumn 1994 show that 1.8 million males agreed between 50 and 65 were not in full-time employment. Of these, 0.1 million worked 16 hours or less per week, 0.3 million were ILO unemployed and 1.4 million were economically inactive, a category which includes long-term sick and disabled and retirees.

Over three quarters of the economically inactive males—about 1.1 million people—included in this figure stated, in reply to the LFS, that they did not want a job.
