§ Mr. ForthThe standards for premises at maintained schools attended by nursery pupils are set out in the Education (School Premises) Regulations 1981 made under the Education Act 1944.
The qualifications required of teachers employed at maintained nursery schools are governed by the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993 made under the Education Reform Act 1988.
There are no statutory requirements for staff-pupil ratios and nursery assistant qualifications in maintained nursery schools and classes. Guidance on such matters is given in the Children Act 1989 guidance.
