§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the progress and the value of offset projects arising from the A1 Yamamah I and II agreement. [23130.]
§ Mr. FreemanSix projects have been implemented since the A1 Yamamah offset programme was launched in 1989. They are as follows:
- 1. Saudi development and training—providing a wide range of vocational training packages and performing training assessment tasks. The company is fully operational.
- 2. Aircraft accessories and components co-servicing of vital aircraft components. Commenced full operations in mid 1993.
- 3. Glaxo Saudi Arabia—a facility manufacturing ethical pharmaceutical products. Trial production commenced in March 1995.
- 4. United Sugar Co—Tate and Lyle are shareholders in a world scale sugar refinery project. Construction will start in Julie 1995.
- 5. Middle East Propulsion Co—the repair and maintenance of civil and military gas turbines. Rolls-Royce are partners in this project. Factory construction to start in mid 1995.
- 6. Cyclar—a licensing venture to produce aromatics from Liquefied Petroleum Gas using a process jointly developed by UOP and BP. The project is still at the pre-engineering stage.
The total value of the projects is approximately £460 million.
