HC Deb 05 May 1995 vol 259 c325W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the effects of income tax at the rates of 1978 and 1995 on the average general practitioner's and on the average NHS consultant's earnings. [21741]

Sir George Young

Based on expected levels of average net incomes for general practitioners providing general medical services in 1994–95, a single GP will pay over £65 a week less income tax in 1995–96 than under a 1978–79 indexed tax regime. In addition, a GP could also earn income from non-GMS sources. For the purposes of the calculation, it has been assumed that the GP has no tax allowances or reliefs except for the basic personal allowance.

It is not possible to produce a comparable estimate for consultants because the latest available data relate to 1991–92 levels of earnings.
