HL Deb 04 May 1995 vol 563 cc124-5WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What representations they are making to the Government of Rwanda regarding the use of lethal force by the Rwandan army in clearing the camps for internally displaced people in south-west Rwanda.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

I have sent messages to the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister of Rwanda expressing our grave concern at the events at Kibeho. Together with EU and Security Council partners, we have stressed the need to ensure the safety of the internally displaced and other refugees. We welcome the proposal for an international inquiry into events at Kibeho and are ready to take part.

Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they are taking to ensure access by humanitarian agencies to internally displaced people who were forced to leave their camps in south-west Rwanda on 22 and 23 April.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Together with our EU and UN partners, we are working with the Government of Rwanda to ensure the delivery and distribution of humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced and other refugees. We are in close contact with the UN agencies and our NGO's about this.
