HC Deb 04 May 1995 vol 259 cc274-5W
Ms Church

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what cost-benefit analysis has been carried out on the likely effect of retaining the restriction on the number of minor operations at the same time as improving general practitioner's surgeries; [22387]

(2) what limit is placed on general practitioners per quarter in respect of minor operations and for what reasons; and what assessment she has made of the consistency of this policy with a primary care driver approach to health care. [22389]

Mr. Malone

General practitioners may claim specific fees under the statement of fees and allowances for up to 15 minor surgical procedures a quarter. This represents a balanced approach between the procedures on the minor surgery list and the other responsibilities of GPs to their patients. Procedures not on the minor surgery list may be performed by GPs under direct contract with a local purchaser, where this will provide an efficient and effective service to patients.

Ms Church

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans she has to review the limit on minor operations to take into account(a) general practitioner list size and (b) differential needs across the country. [22388]

Mr. Malone

None.
