The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about the current prison population in Wales; and for the figures for each of the previous four years.On 24 April the number of prisoners being held in Prison Service establishments in Wales was 853. The average populations of establishments in Wales for the previous four years are shown in the table below. The prisoners will not necessarily have been sentenced or committed by Welsh courts nor have committed their offences in Wales.
