To ask the Secretary of State for Health what action her Department is taking to reduce the level of prescription fraud. [16887]

From 1 April 1995 patients who obtain dispensed items from community pharmacists or dispensing doctors will be asked to complete a written declaration stating the specific grounds for claiming exemption or remission of the prescription charge due, or the amount of the charge paid. The revised declarations will improve the effectiveness of confirmatory checks and are a significant first step towards reducing prescription fraud.

I am considering what further measures are necessary.
