HC Deb 30 March 1995 vol 257 cc810-2W
Mrs. Roche

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of prisoners eligible for parole was successful in achieving parole in the last year for which figures are available. [16689]

Mr. Michael Forsyth

[holding answer 28 March 1995]: Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mrs. Barbara Roche, dated 30 March 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the proportion of prisoners eligible for parole who were paroled. The parole statistics are published in the Annual Reports of the Parole Board. The latest issue is for 1993 (Cm 450), a copy of which is available in the Library of the House. The statistics for 1994 will be published in the 1994 issue of the Annual Report of the Parole Board. They comprise prisoners considered under the 1991 Criminal Justice Act and those under previous legislation. Provisional figures for 1994 show that 42 per cent of prisoners considered were paroled.
