To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the employment of polling or public survey organisations by his Department during the current and previous financial years, on the organisations employed by his Department, on the values of individual contracts for these services, on the total amounts of money spent and on the purposes of the research undertaken by these organisations. I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer given by the Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, my right hon. Friend the Member for Eddisbury (Mr. Goodlad), on 27 October 1994,Official Report, column 761. The FCO has not conducted any public opinion surveys since January 1994.

The purpose of the research undertaken by public survey organisations is to provide information useful to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as background for Government policy.
