To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what progress has been made into researching the potential development of the remote reversal of escalators to effect rapid evacuation of passengers from underground stations.

I understand that Her Majesty's railway inspectorate has commissioned a research project into this subject from the health and safety laboratory in Sheffield.
