To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how much money has been spent by the Health and Safety Executive in employing private sector consultants in support of its market testing and contracting out programme; and for what purposes. [29214]

In the period from 1992 to 1993, the Health and Safety Executive has spent a total of £386,759 on private sector consultancy in support of its market testing and contracting out programme.

These consultants have been used to support in-house teams in constructing their bids, and to advise the HSE on the various aspects of particular procurements.

To date, the gross saving for market testing and contracting out is £2.68 million.
