HC Deb 26 June 1995 vol 262 cc436-7W
Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what studies his Department has funded into work-related upper limb disorders since the publication of the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council report into work-related upper limb disorders in May 1992. [29906]

Mr. Oppenheim

The Health and Safety Executive has funded a range of studies into work-related upper limb disorders since May 1992.

Intramural studies include work on musculoskeletal disorders in supermarket check-out workers, and techniques for assessing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, both of which encompass ULDs.

Extramural research includes work on a user performance test method to support international visual display unit ergonomic standards; an ongoing epidemiological and ergonomic study of occupational factors associated with upper limb soft tissue disorders in keyboard operators; an ongoing project to assess the health and safety implications of virtual reality systems; and two projects to collect ergonomic case studies giving employers practical advice on ways of preventing ULDs which were published last October in the booklet "A pain in your workplace?"
