HC Deb 22 June 1995 vol 262 c413W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what support his Department is giving to local authorities in Wales to assist them to develop their systems for monitoring volatile organic compounds. [29488]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

Under its strategy to curb emissions of volatile organic compounds, the Government are taking a range of measures including controls on industrial sources, tighter standards for vehicles, and increased monitoring. As part of this we are encouraging the integration of local authority monitoring into the UK network and aiming to provide support to councils on quality controls aspects. In Wales, the Welsh Office has also co-operated with councils on the establishment of the new air quality forum to help monitor and assess, on a consistent basis, compounds and other air pollutants.
