HC Deb 19 June 1995 vol 262 c46W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the availability of treatment in the NHS for transsexuals. [29549]

Mr. Sackville

Transsexualism is a clinically recognised condition for which, in certain cases, gender reassignment is considered appropriate. A system of referral exists within the national health service for patients to be seen by specialists through the recommendation of their general practitioner. The decision on whether a particular course of treatment should be given is based on the assessment made by the consultant in charge of each case.
