HC Deb 19 June 1995 vol 262 c47W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what research and action he had taken in conjunction with English Heritage over the archaeological findings at Mount Grace priory, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire on the making of liqueur by the Carthusian monks at the priory; and if he will make a statement. [27934]

Mr. Dorrell

Mount Grace priory is an historic property managed by English Heritage. I understand that, using general archaeological evidence, English Heritage has planted a herb garden which, for 1995, contains many of the plants likely to have been used in the manufacture of herbal beverages in the 15th century, but that there is no direct archaeological evidence for the manufacture of any particular liqueur by Carthusian monks at Mount Grace priory.
