To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is the number and percentage of students in higher education qualifying for full maintenance grants. [20011]

Information is collected centrally only on the effect of means testing on some grants paid to students in higher education. Provisional figures for 1993–94 show that 325,000 mandatory award holders domiciled in England and Wales received grants which were not reduced on account of their or their parents' or spouses' resources. This represents 45 per cent. of all mandatory award holders.
