Mrs. Beckett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the average wage increase and what perks have been provided to(a) unit executives and (b) general and senior managers in the health service in each of the last four years. [26284]

Mr. Malone

[holding answer 25 May 1995]: Information on the movements in average earnings of these groups of health service staff is not available centrally. For those staff employed on the national terms and conditions for general and senior managers, basic salaries were increased by 6 per cent. in 1991, 3.9 per cent. in 1992, 1.5 per cent. in 1993 and 2.2 per cent. in 1994, with increases effective from 1 September in those years. National health service trusts are free to engage staff on such terms and conditions as they see fit.
