HC Deb 14 June 1995 vol 261 cc565-6W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the estimated expenditure for 1995 for producing information on infant and young child feeding(a) for families and (b) for those involved in the field of infant and young child nutrition. [27927]

Mrs. Browning

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer that I gave him on 7 June 1995,Official Report, columns 211–12, which indicates that my Department is currently developing a healthy eating booklet in the "Foodsense" series aimed at the mothers of toddlers. My Department is not currently planning further material specifically on infant and young child feeding.

Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will make a statement on the application of article 9.1 of EC directive 91/321/EEC on material produced by manufacturers and distributors of infant formula; [27985]

(2) if the word "objective" in article 9.1 of EC directive 91/321/EEC excludes material produced by those with a financial interest in infant feeding. [27924]

Mr. Sackville

I have been asked to reply.

EC directive 91/321/EEC has been implemented in the United Kingdom by the Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula Regulations 1995. A working group set up by the Department of Health is formulating guidance covering the content, planning and design of material described in article 9.1 to help make sure that, regardless of its source, such material contains objective and consistent information.
