§ Mr. WorthingtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he set up the committee to review Northern Ireland's policing; and what is its remit, time scale and membership. [26647]
§ Sir John WheelerThe committee which will oversee the fundamental review of policing needs is an established part of the tripartite relationship for policing. It first met in October 1993, and its membership comprises officials from the Northern Ireland Office and from the Police Authority for Northern Ireland as well as officers from the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The remit of this committee in relation to the review is, on the assumption that the ceasefires continue, to build an assessment of Northern Ireland's policing needs and costs, and initial findings are expected in spring 1996.
