Under the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993 the person concerned must be given an opportunity to make representations, and each case must be considered on its individual merits. My right hon. Friend is consulting on an amendment to the 9W regulations which would enable those convicted of sexual offences against children under 16 years of age to be barred from teaching as soon as the conviction is notified.
