HC Deb 06 June 1995 vol 261 cc8-9W
Mrs. Golding

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how long it takes to have a name added to list 99 after conviction of a person for child abuse. [26753]

Mr. Forth

The time taken varies. Under the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993 the person concerned must be given an opportunity to make representations, and each case must be considered on its individual merits. My right hon. Friend is consulting on an amendment to the regulations which would enable those convicted of sexual offences against children under 16 years of age to be barred from teaching as soon as the conviction is notified.
