HC Deb 06 June 1995 vol 261 cc122-3W
Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what studies have been made of the likely consequences for the United Kingdom of its accession to the Schengen agreement. [27029]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

None. The United Kingdom is not a party to the Schengen agreement and has no intention of applying for membership, which would be inconsistent with the maintenance of our system of frontier controls.

Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimates have been made of any changes in the net migration flows between those European Union countries which have implemented the Schengen agreement. [27028]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

The United Kingdom has made no such estimates.

Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures have been taken to strengthen the European Union's external frontiers following the implementation of the Schengen agreement by seven member states. [27026]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

The Schengen agreement is not an agreement of the European Union and its provisions relate only to the external frontiers of the Schengen area, not to those of the Union.
