Letter from Derek Lewis to Dr. Lynne Jones, dated 6 June 1995:
The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the catchment areas for sentenced and remand prisoners in Holloway prison and Styal prison.Holloway prison holds female prisoners committed by the courts from the following areas:Greater London (including City of London)
- Bedfordshire
- Berkshire
- Buckinghamshire
- Cambridgeshire
- Essex
- Hampshire
- Hertfordshire
- Isle of Wight
- Kent
- Norfolk
- Northamptonshire
- Oxfordshire
- Suffolk
- Surrey
- East and West Sussex
Styal prison is a training establishment and accommodates sentenced female prisoners allocated from local prisons under the criteria and procedures set out in Circular Instruction 2/1991, a copy of which is available in the Library of the House. As a contingency 125W arrangement, it can take a limited number of unsentenced female prisoners from Risley, if this becomes necessary, because of population pressures in the region. Risley serves the courts in the North West of England, North and Mid Wales, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
