To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Tayside, North (Mr. Walker)Official Report, 9 May, column 406, how many D5 missiles HMS Vanguard picked up from Kings bay prior to her deployment; how many D5 missiles are currently held at Coulport; and what means, other than transport by Trident submarine, his Department employs to transfer D5 missiles from King's bay to Coulport. HMS Vanguard collected 16 unarmed Trident II D5 missiles from Kings bay prior to deployment; none are held at the Royal Naval armament depot, Coulport. Vanguard class SSBNs are the only means by which these missiles are transported from the Us to the United Kingdom.
