HC Deb 06 June 1995 vol 261 cc138-9W
16. Mr. Jon Owen Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what discussions he has had with his NATO counterparts concerning the future withdrawal of the UN from Bosnia. [25109]

Mr. Soames

My right hon. and learned Friend has regular discussions with NATO colleagues on a range of issues concerning Bosnia, including contingency planning for an operation to withdraw UN forces, should that become necessary.

20. Mr. Lewis

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many troops would be required to facilitate a UN withdrawal from Bosnia. [25113]

Mr. Soames

At the request of the UN Secretary General, NATO is continuing with contingency planning for an operation to withdraw UN forces from Bosnia, should that become necessary. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on the details of the plan, which are a matter for NATO.

17. Mr. Wicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will report on the latest situation regarding the shelling of Sarajevo. [25110]

24. Sir Thomas Arnold

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a further statement about the deployment of British forces in Bosnia. [25117]

Mr. Soames

We deplore the continued fighting between Bosnian Government and Bosnian Serb forces in and around Sarajevo. We condemn in the strongest terms the indiscriminate attacks on civilians and the deliberate targeting of UNPROFOR troops in the city, and call on the parties to refrain from further military action.
