How Lord Mackay of Ardbrecknish's figure that the Child Support Act 1991 had produced "recorded benefit savings of £897 million" (House of Lords Deb., 6 July, col. 1340) was arrived at.

Lord Mackay of Ardbrecknish

The Child Support Agency achieved benefit savings totalling £417.84 million during 1993/94 and £479.05 million during 1994/95, giving a total of just under £897 million. This was comprised of £397.32 million from maintenance assessments and £499.57 million from reductions in benefit or income support ceasing.
