asked Her Majesty's Government:

In relation to the recent Community Study of Physical Violence to Children in the Home and Associated Variables, carried out by Dr. Marjorie Smith of the Thomas Coram Research Unit and others, and commissioned by the Department of Health,

  1. (a) when the study was completed;
  2. (b) what part of the total cost of the study was paid for by government funds;
  3. (c) what results of the study have so far been published; and
  4. (d) what other plans there are for publication of the full results of the study.

This title referred to is from a project paper recently presented in Oslo, Norway by Dr. Marjorie Smith of the Thomas Coram Research Unit. The material was drawn from the main studyParental Control within the Family: The Nature and Extent of Parental Violence to Children, which was funded from the Department of Health's policy research programme and completed in December 1994.

The results of the study published so far are those covered in Child Protection: Messages from Research. Copies of this publication are available in the Library. A series of papers detailing the full results are being prepared for publication.
