HC Deb 19 July 1995 vol 263 cc1462-3W
Miss Hoey

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage (1) what assessment she has made of the adequacy of the action being taken to promote anti-drug activities inside British sport; and if he will make a statement; [34449]

(2) what assessment she has made of the efficiency of the current drug testing programme run by the Sports Council. [34448]

Mr. Sproat

I have made no specific assessment of the Sports Council's drug testing programme, but am confident that, combined with its education and information programmes, it provides an efficient and effective method of controlling drug abuse in sport in the United Kingdom. This view was endorsed by the Sports Council's survey of elite competitors, a summary of which was published on 7 July. The council is also currently carrying out a consultation exercise aimed at enhancing and improving its existing doping control programmes.
