To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about possible defence agency status for the Royal Navy's manning and pay and pensions organisations. [36386]

Mr. Soames

I have decided that the Royal Navy's manning and pay and pensions organisations, with their supporting information systems should be considered as candidates for defence agency status under the "next steps" initiative. The above organisations, located in Portsmouth and Gosport, currently employ some 750 staff, of whom about a third are service personnel.

A "prior options" study will be undertaken to establish whether agency status or other options would be appropriate. I would welcome comments form interested parties. Comments should be sent, by 15 September 1995, to:
