To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many(a) secondary and (b) primary school children have been permanently excluded in each of the last five years; [35846]

(2) how many (a) secondary and (b) primary school children have been permanently excluded in each local education authority in each of the last five years and as a proportion of the total school roll. [35842]

The information sought is not at present held centrally. However, under the terms of a circular issued by the Scottish Office Education Department, education authorities are to collect and provide information on exclusions on a school by school basis for school year 1994–95, and subsequent years, as part of the annual exercise to collect statistics on attendance and absence.
