To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, how many(a) secondary and (b) primary school children who have been permanently excluded have received tuition (i) at home and (ii) in a pupil referral unit in each of the past five years. [35840]

Following the Elton committee of inquiry into discipline in schools, the Welsh Office monitored through the national exclusions reporting system, the incidence and circumstances of permanent exclusions over a two-year period from the summer of 1990. A total of 192 exclusions reported, of which 11 per cent. were in the primary sector. The breakdown by local education authority is as follows:
