To ask the Chairman of the Public Accounts Commission what is the annual expenditure for the National Audit Office for the last year for which figures are available. [27969]

The appropriation account for 1994–95 for the National Audit Office, class XIX B, was published on 5 July as House of Commons Paper No. 476. Gross expenditure for the year totalled £42.2 million, and net expenditure, after taking account of appropriations in aid, totalled £36.2 million, a saving of about £0.3 million on planned net expenditure for the year.

Sir Peter Hordern

During 1994–95 the National Audit Office employed around 750 staff, comprising 650 permanent employees and around 100 on short-term contract or seconded in, the latter mainly in support of value-for-money investigations.
