§ Mr. DonohoeTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what measures his Department has taken to encourage the promotion of women into senior positions within his Department and its executive agencies. [35668]
§ Mr. SackvilleThe Department, including its agencies, is committed to equality of opportunity for all its employees regardless of gender. To increase the proportion of women in senior positions, the Department has adopted a number of measures, including:
- allowing career breaks and other flexible working patterns to enable women to combine their careers with domestic responsibilities;
- providing help to parents with children, including nursery places and holiday play schemes;
- providing, whenever possible, management development and training programmes which are suited to the needs of staff with domestic responsibilities for whom attendance at residential courses would not be possible;
- ensuring that most job opportunities are advertised and candidates are invited to indicate whether they wish to be considered on full-time, part-time or job-share basis;
- appointing whenever possible, at least, one woman on each selection/promotion board.
Additional information on progress made by the Department on Equal Opportunities generally is contained in the Department's 1993–94 equal opportunities progress report, copies of which are available in the Library.
