Mr. Godsiff

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what questions Jonathan Stone, head of the Barings Bondholder Action Group, has asked the Governor of the Bank of England; and on what grounds they have not been answered; [35482]

(2) what assessment he has made of why the Bank of England, as supervisor of the banking system, did not detect warning signals showing that Barings was facing unsustainable losses of capital before it went into administration. [35481]

Mrs. Angela Knight

I regret that it has not been possible to provide a substantive answer before the summer recess. I shall write to the hon. Member shortly and place a copy of the letter in the Library.
