To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the cost of the sheep annual premium scheme in 1994–95; what proportion of the United Kingdom figure this represents; and if he will make a statement. [35123]

The estimated outturn for the financial year 1 April 1994 to 31 March 1995 is £90.1 million. This represents 22.7 per cent. of the United Kingdom total.

Payments under the beef special premium scheme in Scotland in the financial year 1994–95 totalled £27.4 million.

The estimated outturn for the financial year 1 April 1994 to 31 March 1995 is £48.7 million.

Four applications under the 1994 suckler cow premium scheme were formally lodged with the Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department after the final date for receipt of valid applications.
