HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 cc1208-9W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how much money has been given by his office each year since 1990 to youth organisations that promote the Welsh language; [35487]

(2) how much of the money that has been given each year since 1990 to youth organisations that actively promote the Welsh language by the Welsh Office comes from Europe; and from what scheme it is paid. [35485]

Mr. Richards

I will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible and place a copy of my reply in the Library of the House.

Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much money was given by his office to voluntary organisations that teach the Welsh language to adult learners in each year since 1991–92. [35486]

Mr. Richards

Since 1 April 1993, the Further Education Funding Council for Wales has been able to fund voluntary organisations via sponsorship and franchise arrangements with further education institutes. The funding council does not hold information on the level of funding that voluntary organisations receive for Welsh adult provision. However, the Welsh Office and the Welsh Language board have made the following contributions to the National Language centre at Nant Gwrtheyrn since 1991–92.

  • 1991–92: £73,500
  • 1992–93: £79,000
  • 1993–94: £93,600
  • 1994–95: £105,000

Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what proportion of the Welsh Language board's budget is spent on administration; and if he will make a statement. [34978]

Mr. Richards

The Welsh Language Board's running costs for 1995–96 are £1,123,000. Within that allocation central administration costs, accommodation costs and the salaries of the staff employed on central administrative duties are estimated to be £400,000, about 20 per cent. of the board's total budget for the year.
