HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 c1221W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what experiments have been conducted on civilians in Wales without their knowledge by the Medical Research Council to assess the effects of radiation on humans. [35156]

Mr. Ian Taylor

Since at least 1963, it has been the Medical Research Council's established practice to obtain consent from volunteers, patients or otherwise, and to explain the procedures, in relation to all studies which are not specifically geared to contributing to the benefit of the patient. This includes studies assessing the effects of radiation on humans. The MRC has issued its own statement.
