HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 cc1194-5W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the number of state-funded postgraduate students in the United Kingdom as a proportion of the entire United Kingdom higher education student population; and if she will make a statement. [34965]

Mr. Forth

In the academic year 1992–93, the latest year for which information is available, there were 44,500 postgraduate award holders in the United Kingdom—3 per cent. of all home students in higher education and 25 per cent. of the postgraduate population.

In addition, an unknown number of postgraduate students will have received state support from other sources including access funds and student loans—where studying for a postgraduate certificate in education.
