HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 cc1152-4W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to the answer of 13 December 1994,Official Report, column 616, if he will now update the figures on NHS salary costs.

Mr. Malone

The information is shown in the table. The increase in general and senior management costs are largely a result of(a) the reclassification of staff from professional and administrative groups, including many senior nurses, as managers; (b) the devolution to trusts of areas of work formally covered by district health authorities or regional health authorities (c) deliberate strengthening of the management of corporate functions and clinical support.
