To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the size of the backlog of maintenance in higher education buildings in Northern Ireland which needs to be undertaken to meet statutory requirements; and what proposals he has to carry out the work. [34749]

The KDK report of 1992 identified a backlog of maintenance in the Northern Ireland universities, of which some £12.5 million related to meeting statutory requirements.

Since 1992, the universities have spent £15 million on backlog maintenance, of which the Department has provided grant of £7 million.
