Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what has been capital expenditure on colleges of further education in both cash and constant price terms in every year since 1979. [34022]

Mr. Paice

The information requested is available only since 1989–90, and is set out in the table.

Capital expenditure at colleges of further education in England, 1989–90–1993–94
Year £ million (cash) £ million (1994 prices)
1989–90 141 173
1990–91 123 140
1991–92 98 105
1992–93 107 110
1993–94 261 261

Notes:

1Expenditure between 1989–90 and 1992–93 was incurred by local authorities. It does not include expenditure at sixth form colleges, for which separate data are not available.

2 The 1993–94 figure shows expenditure incurred by colleges, including sixth form colleges, in the further education sector between April 1993 and July 1994 (16 months).

3All the cash figures show outturn expenditure from all sources. Those for 1989–90–1992–93 are derived from local authorities' expenditure returns to DOE. That for 1993–94 has been aggregated by FEFC from colleges' accounts.
