HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 c1222W
Mr. Spellar

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what action he proposes to take to prevent imports from countries where child labour is employed. [34272]

Mr. Nelson

The Government are fully committed to international action to stop the exploitation of child labour, but do not believe that preventing imports from countries where it occurs is the answer. The best way of tackling the problem is by raising living standards in developing countries. Restricting imports would be counter-productive, as it would deprive such countries of the income from trade.
