To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information the Government have about levels of pollution in urban areas; and if he will provide the most recent available figures so as to enable a comparison to be made between Manchester and other areas. [35381]

Mr. Clappison

The Government monitor air pollution in urban areas through their automated urban network. The monitoring site in Manchester measures continuously concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. Comparisons between Manchester and other selected areas of recorded concentrations of these pollutants in 1994 are as follows:
