To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people, by Crown court circuit region, are on remand in custody awaiting trial in the Crown court. [34806]

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Stephen Byers, dated 17 July 1995:

The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many people, by Crown Court circuit region, are on remand in custody awaiting trial in the Crown Court.The available information shows that there were 4,224 untried prisoners in Prison Service establishments on 31 May 1995 in England and Wales who were committed for, or were in the course of, trial at the Crown Court. A breakdown by Crown Court circuit region is not available.
