HC Deb 14 July 1995 vol 263 c850W
Mr. Bradley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the percentage contribution of social security to the incomes of those in the bottom 10 per cent. through to 50 per cent. of the income distribution, by decile. [33474]

Mr. Andrew Mitchell

[holding answer 10 July 1995]: The information is in the table.

Results for the lowest income deciles exaggerate the proportion of income from social security benefits. This is because the value of benefits received by one member of the household entitled to receive them may be higher than total net household income, after taking into account, for example, business losses by other household members. Such cases are concentrated towards the bottom of income distribution.

Contribution of Social Security benefits to the bottom five deciles of the income distribution.
Decile Group Social Security benefits as a percentage of total income
Bottom 82
Second 70
Third 50
Fourth 31
Fifth 20

Notes:

  1. 1. Figures are for the United Kingdom in 1992–93—the two calender years combined.
  2. 2. Results for the bottom decile will be dominated by people in the top half of the decile since they will have the higher incomes.
